Authors Commentary & Discussion

This post contains spoilers if you have not read up to Chapter 2.20

Hi guys, it’s Kristin. I’m sitting here, feeling really bad, because I’m about to blow up poor Isis’s life. So I thought it was a good time to take a break and tell you a little about my writing journey, share my thoughts on certain scenes, and give you a better understanding of my characters.

When I was in 6th grade, my grandma gifted me my first journal. I quickly filled it up with my day-to-day thoughts and have continued to fill countless journals throughout my life. I’ve always had a journal, a notebook, or a notepad nearby. I take notes on anything, keep lists of everything, scribble down dreams, document ideas, and never stop logging my thoughts. Writing has always been part of who I am… but I’m not a storyteller.

I started reading SimLit just about 2 years ago (well past its popular heyday) and one day I impulsively decided to start my own legacy story. Things were light and funny in the beginning but as I continued playing and writing, I started taking my storytelling more seriously. When I began Isis’s story, I was surprised at how easily the ideas flowed from my brain! Before I consciously realized it, I had created two characters, Isis and Jackie, who each felt like different parts of myself when I was younger. I was telling a story and using my own experiences as inspiration for the plots. Is this what it feels like to be a writer?!!

Okay, so I’ll never publish a novel but I’m very proud of my story so far!

In the beginning we see a timid girl who blushes at everything, is pampered and adored by her parents, and has literally zero real world experience. She DID ask to go to public school, which shows she is curious to expand her horizons, but her maturity level is a little behind that of her classmates. As time passes and she spends more time with Jackie, she slowly becomes more sure of herself. I hope I did a decent job portraying Isis’s eyes opening as she experiences things for the first time.

At this current point in the story, she’s now lying, drinking, sneaking around, choosing excitement over safety, and ignoring relationship red flags.

There have been quite a few moments with Roman that the average person would question: The text he got on the first day of school. His “I’m dealing with something” comment. His coldness about Isis’s streaming. Ava’s cryptic “Nice to see you again” comment.

Instead of insisting they talk about these things, she sweeps them under the rug and never questions Roman. Is she purposely ignoring signs that she knows are leading to something bad? Or is she truly that oblivious? I haven’t even decided so I would love to know your thoughts!

When there were signs of Jackie’s abuse, and when she discovers the abuse, she chooses to keep quiet. These are shocking moments to a girl who has been so sheltered, and I pointed that out with Jackie yelling at her for “standing there looking stupid”. Is staying quiet the right decision? Does she do it out of loyalty? Out of fear? Or is she that naive and doesn’t realize the gravity of the situation?

Isis choosing to stream instead of getting a “normal” job is her way of breaking away from what’s expected of her. All her life she’s played it safe and followed the rules. This is a moment when we see Isis becoming more independent and confident.

The abuse was a plot I knew I was going to use from the very beginning. The story is from Isis’s POV so she had to be there to witness something, but since it’s such a pivotal and emotionally charged scene, I wanted you to directly feel Jackie’s pain. Hence the journal entry chapter, which I thought was a brilliant idea.

This scene also explains a lot about Jackie’s personality. At times, she can seem a little unlikeable or untrustworthy. If she rubs you the wrong way, that’s okay, because I’m aiming to write a character who is often misunderstood.

On the surface she’s an opinionated, wreckless, wild child. In reality, this is a girl who is abused, neglected, and desperate for independence. She is “playing tough” because it’s a survival mechanism to mask her vulnerabilities and insecurities. Knowing these things about her, do you think she’s a bad influence on Isis? Is Isis a good influence on her?

We don’t know how long her stepdad has been making passes at her, but that definitely had an influence on her decision to start webcamming. As sick as it is, she learned at a young age that she was sexually desirable, so it seems fitting she found a way to use her sexuality as currency. She lights up when talking about camming because it’s something in her life she feels she can control.

Jackie’s dating history can also be explained by her childhood. Having shitty parental figures and no role models in her life, she doesn’t understand how healthy relationships work. As a victim of sexual and physical abuse, Jackie seeks out boys to fill a void, to feel wanted, to numb her pain, and to distract her from real life.

This is a heartbreaking reality for many women, including myself, who suffered abuse.

Oh Roman. Such a sweet and charming boy but he IS just a boy, and he’s made a very bad decision.

The story continues soon! Hope you’re on my subscriber list so you get notified when the next chapter is posted!

You ARE a writer! Your characters are well thought out and relatable.I was the Isis of my frenemies. Then by high school I made friends with people I chose rather than they chose me. For me, it’s not that I dislike Jackie, but she reminds me a lot of my old frenemies. Same reason why I have a bit of an aversion to Chloe from “Life is Strange.”

😊Thank you so much for your support, and not only for reading along but taking time to share your thoughts and comments. It means so much!

I hadn’t heard of Life is Strange, I thought it was a book or movie, so I looked it up and it’s a video game! I’m intrigued and putting it on my possible purchase list! Would you recommend it?

I wouldn’t recommend it only because the choices become bottle-necked into two in the end. Kinda makes the rest of your choices seem meaningless imo.

It’s exciting to hear about your thoughts. I definitely interpret you thinking like a writer when the characters live in you the way they do 🥰

As I understand Isis so far, I would say that she shows that she is very young and has lived a sheltered life. She can’t possibly comprehend the seriousness of the things Jackie is struggling with and at the same time she is really loyal to a friend she really looks up to. Jackie represents so much of what she misses achieving (as well as something she absolutely does not lack). I don’t think she has the tools to handle the unpleasant things she experiences around Jackie as well as Rowan. Jackie is her hero and she will never question her actions.
Rowan is…well, what is he really to her? A boyfriend maybe, but not a boyfriend who lives up to her expectations. She treats him more as something she expects to be in her life than with an actual passion. Hence perhaps her lack of a position on his mistakes.
On the other hand, her streaming seems like something she is really passionate about. Something she has made an independent choice about regardless of whether her surroundings approve of it. Here I think Jackie’s support means a lot to her.

I really feel sorry for Jackie. She tries in every way to deal with her own terrible situation, but like Isis she lacks tools. She also lacks a responsible adult who can show her healthier ways of doing things. A task Isis is impossible to accomplish.. I think I have commented on her quite a bit while I have been reading the chapters, because you describe her so clearly. You feel her pain behind her confident exterior.

The way you view Isis makes me so happy. You understand who I imagine her to be in my head and how I try to write her. She definitely is not equipped (mentally or emotionally) to deal with Jackie’s situation. Plus, she really looks up to Jackie so when Jackie tells her “Don’t worry about me” that’s exactly what Isis does.: She doesn’t take any action (ie: tell an adult) because Jackie is asking her not to.

As far as Roman goes, Isis literally hasn’t “lived and learned” and she’s letting his small behaviors pass because she hasn’t experienced enough to recognize the signs.

It’s kind of funny because Isis is my main character, but I really love Jackie so much and her story could be so much more interesting than Isis’s hahaha. I actually have this spinoff idea, maybe someday I’ll write a whole story with Jackie as the main character, but when they’re older, after I’m finished with this story.

Thank you SO MUCH, my friend, for sharing your thoughts.

Is it how your feel? Then, I’d say yeah. I mean, we’re writers. We write stuff.

You should be proud. It’s a great story. Also, publishing novels is one way to write but it’s not the only way to write.

    Isis’s Moral Evolution
Honestly, Isis’s ‘evolution’ still breaks my heart just a bit. At the same time, I recognize the need for young people to challenge expectations and discover themselves. I just wish Isis could do that without hurting herself. The burned hand teaches, but it’s hard to watch some burn themselves. It does make interesting reading however.

Is she purposely ignoring signs that she knows are leading to something bad? Or is she truly that oblivious? I haven’t even decided so I would love to know your thoughts!
‘I would love to know your thoughts!’ … oh you mad, mad fool. 🙂

I don’t think she’s making a conscious choice to ignore the signs. I think Isis is still innocent enough, and romantic enough, that she’s blinded to Roman’s behavior. Young love is passionate, all consuming and breathtakingly stupid. It’s all New Relationship Energy and hormones and it makes you make stunningly bad decisions… which has actually been argued is an evolutionary adaptation. If you actually thought about the consequences, no teenager would have babies… but back in the days when we lived in caves, we needed to.

Not knowing 100% what Roman has done, I’m guessing it was also a stupid decision driven by New Relationship Energy and hormones… It’s all part of that wild ride that is adolescence.

Sometimes, I wonder how we ever survived it.

    Jackie’s Abuse & Behaviors
Speaking of ‘I wonder how we ever survived it’ … I wonder if Jackie will.

When I was in high school (back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth), I had a crush on a girl… LeeAnn. LeeAnn was beautiful and brilliant and a little sad. It turned out, she was being abused by her father. We, all her friends, knew it. She didn’t even really hide it. Looking back, I don’t think I ever told an adult. I don’t think it ever even occurred to me to go to my mom and say “LeeAnn’s dad beats her.” LeeAnn insisted she could handle it and that there was nothing we could, or should, do. While it upset me and her boyfriend, we accepted that. The last I heard from her (shortly after I finished college) LeeAnn was already divorced, had a kid and was making money writing short pornographic fiction for magazines (this was when the world wide web was a new thing and long before webcams).

So, thinking about it, I find Jackie’s situation and Isis’s response very familiar. Sad and familiar.

This is a heartbreaking reality for many women, including myself, who suffered abuse.
All I can say to this is… I hear you.

    The story continues soon!
    Take your time. I’ll wait… you know a whole 5, maybe 10 minutes… 🙂

I have always been a writer, I wrote stories with my dolls when I was a kid, then typed them up on my moms computer and made her read them. I guess simlit is basically the same thing LOL. Being a writer, I think, is different from being an author. We’re all writers, good, bad, in between – but we like what we write and we’re happy that someone else likes it too. I have written a novel, it had all but four readers, and when I tried to get it published it was a dead no. Am I still proud. H*** yes I wrote a full on novel and no one can take that away from me. You should be proud too, you’re writing something you’re passionate about and you like what you write, as do many of the rest of us, so yeah, be proud.

Is she purposely ignoring signs that she knows are leading to something bad? Or is she truly that oblivious? I haven’t even decided so I would love to know your thoughts!
I agree with luciusstorm , be careful what you wish for.

I don’t think it’s pure naivety that makes Isis ignore what is going on, some definitely, but mostly I think she fears what finding out will mean. Will she has to break up with the boy she cares about? Will she have to face a broken heart? Fully grown women turn a blind eye because the consequences of seeing are too much to handle. Is it always a conscious decision? Maybe not. I think we’re really good at convincing ourselves that things are normal even when they’re not, or finding “logical” explanation why things aren’t what they seem to be and convincing ourselves that’s the truth. People do it all the time. Isis parents do it too, by the way.

When there were signs of Jackie’s abuse, and when she discovers the abuse, she chooses to keep quiet.

Unfortunately we as a society are really good at fostering the “you don’t rat a friend out”-mentality in kids. So they don’t tell. Not when they’re being bullied, not when someone else is, not when there is abuse in the picture either. It’s realistic, but entirely stupid. Isis should tell someone. Will it upset Jackie – of course it will. Will her life become better? Maybe? But then the system isn’t a good place to be either. And Jackie isn’t really good at accepting help either, because Isis already offered her the solution – move in with Isis until she is out of school. Jackie turned her down, which is understandable, but still the worst thing she could do. Jackie is really realistically written, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less heartbreaking to read about her.

Thank you for reading along and sharing your thoughts! Would you happen to have that novel readily sharable? What is it about? I would love to check it out, but no pressure!

You nailed it on the head about Isis’s fears about Roman. I think deep down she knows something has happened, but she refuses to acknowledge it. Like if you pretend it doesn’t exist, it will go away. It shows her inexperience. Which isn’t a bad thing necessarily, it’s just that as teens we haven’t “lived and learned” yet.

Regarding Jackie, I think the foster system would not be good for her. She would be the problem because she’s too feisty and stubborn and thinks she’s a grown woman who knows it all lol. Deep down, Isis probably knows that and doesn’t want to put Jackie through such an upheaval.

I love hearing about your writing journey! I’m not as disciplined, most of my journals become abandoned. My longest streak was when my friends and I exchanged diaries. Believe it or not, that caused its own drama so it was eventually dropped too.

Much of how Isis deals with things are understandable. As lovely as her parents are and how much they love Isis, I was bummed that they aren’t a stronger influence in her life. Then again, teenagers are all about self-discovery and agency so it will be that much tougher for parents to get involved too. If I had to give young Isis an archetype, and I stress ‘young’, because people change as they grow, she reads as the innocent archetype. I have a soft spot for these types. I feel sorry that our world doesn’t always support them, and growing older can replace that innocence with cynicism and irony.

Hm… Isis doesn’t strike me as someone who has been given the tools and information on how to respond during a crisis. So Isis, or any age of a person who ‘stands there and does nothing’ seems normal to me. Unless they have a specific trait or experience to guide them in the moment, most people would simply not know how to respond.

Jackie is fine to me. Depending on which perspective is given more ground, Isis’s parents will definitely find her a bad influence, Isis will find her liberating and a good influence. And everyone else will have some opinion in-between. But in the end, Jackie’s the one who has to live through it and face the skeletons in her family’s closet. I never walked in her shoes. And I think she’s got too much going on to worry about what kind of influence she has.

I find Jackie relatable. Although I can’t say I had her spunky personality when I had to play the cards I’ve been dealt. I’m keen to see how she uses hers. You use whatever leverage you can in a crisis. Sexuality is a card. A short-term, double edged, and probably a Phyrrhic card, but a card nonetheless. How far can you realistically see if you’re already neck deep in the water, right? Grab the lifeline, deal with the consequences later. I hope it goes well for her.

    1. Kristin Avatar

I love your comments and input!

Damn I can imagine exactly how those shared journals caused drama 😮 Not a good idea in retrospect, huh?! LOL

It’s interesting what you say about her parents. I’ve tried writing them as very loving and adoring, and they were very close when she was a child (their only child) but as she gets older she’s pulling away from them and they don’t necessarily react or respond in the best ways. Other people have commented about their discipline style not being the best and that actually made me write in a future scene with more communication between them, and I do plan on their relationship getting better in the future.

You understand Isis’s lack of action perfectly! She has zero experience/knowledge/tools to deal with Jackie’s situation. And since she looks up to Jackie, when Jackie tells her “Don’t worry about me” that’s basically what Isis does. She stays quiet because her own bestie asked her to.

Jackie’s future has yet to be decided! She’s not my main character but she’s almost more difficult to write than Isis.
