One evening Isis was playing a new song for her parents on the piano they bought her for her last birthday. She was always filling the house with melodic tunes and they were so proud of her. Even Archimedes the cat enjoyed listening to her.

When she finished, her parents applauded and hugged her. Her dad asked “Are you enjoying your Music Theory class?”
She bit her lip. She knew they wanted her to pursue music, and she really loved it, but lately she was noticing the difference between the kids in her music class and the other kids. She didn’t have anything in common with her music classmates and she didn’t hang out with them. She preferred hanging out with Jackie’s friends who were much cooler.
“It’s alright.” She replied nonchalantly, hoping they would drop the subject.

Her dad’s expression turned confused. “You were so excited for that class! What do you mean ‘just alright’?” He asked.
She had always been open with her parents so she told them the truth. “I just don’t really fit in with the other kids. They’re, like, nerdy.”
Her mom busted out a laugh but quickly clapped her hand over her mouth and straightened her expression, saying “Oh hunny, did you know I was the nerdy kid in high school? Appearances aren’t everything. I do want you to have fun, just don’t get too distracted.”

Just then her phone rang and her parents left her to answer it.
“Hey Jackie, what’s up?” she answered.
“Isis.” Jackie stated her name with a serious and urgent tone. “We just got invited to a party this weekend!” she said with excitement bubbling up.
Isis exclaimed “What! Are you serious?!”
Jackie added “And here’s the best part… Roman is going!”
Roman was a boy in Isis’s Algebra class she liked. They talked during lunch sometimes and she confessed her crush to Jackie just the other day.

“Jackie, oh my god, no way! Ughhh, I don’t think my parents will let me go, and… ummm, I’ve never really been to a party before.” As her thoughts swirled in her head, Isis started to get nervous.
“Babe, this really is your first rodeo huh?” Jackie said teasing. “Tell your parents you’re staying at my house.”
Isis replied “They’ll want to talk to your mom.”
“They can call my stepdad. Don’t worry, I’ll tell him what to say.”
That reply was very strange to Isis but she was getting too excited to think about it further. They spent the next half hour talking about what they would wear, and calculating how long the walk would be to the party.
When Isis hung up, she threw herself back onto her bed and kicked her legs in the air with excitement.
