1.13 Once Upon a Wedding

Trella stood at the edge of the garden, listening to the soft murmur of guests, waiting for her cue.

Her and Alec had chosen a wedding venue perched high in the hills of Henford-on-Bagley, surrounded by nature, with a view of the valley beyond. Her brother Tristan was their officiant, and their daughter Isis had decided she wanted to play the piano instead of be the flower girl. They couldn’t be more proud of her for learning the song that Trella was about to walk down the aisle to.

As the music started, Trella took one deep breathe and she stepped onto the aisle. When Alec caught sight of her, he immediately forgot the nervous speech he’d rehearsed all morning. He just smiled at her; the kind of smile that made Trella feel steady again after a morning of sweaty palms and butterflies.

The ceremony was simple and lighthearted. A breeze blew the pages of Tristan’s notes so he had to wing it. Halfway through the vows Alec quietly admitted, “I had something more poetic prepared but forgot it.” Trella giggled and squeezed his hand while everyone else laughed too. Any nervousness they felt was gone when they exchanged rings and Tristan started bawling like a baby.

The rest of the day passed beautifully and Alec kept his promise and did not smear cake on Trella.

Later that evening, long after dinner had ended and the music had slowed, the two of them slipped away from the crowd for a moment. The lights from the reception glowed behind them while they looked up at the stars.

They were both remembering the night Alec had invited her to the bluffs to stargaze and kissed her for the first time in the hot springs. He pulled her in and kissed her right then, firmly, letting her know she was his.

When they pulled apart, Alec whispered, “We finally did it.” She smiled, hearing the happiness and disbelief in his voice, and thought that if the rest of their life felt anything like this moment, it would be enough.

From this point on I’ll be following their daughter Isis, so stay tuned as she starts high school and gets into some… questionable… situations!
